CEB Family Literacy Week
Families across Calgary are invited to join the Calgary Board of Education in celebrating Family Literacy Week from Jan. 26 to Feb. 2, to raise awareness about the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities.
The CBE Literacy & Early Learning Team has prepared a variety of information and activities to help families engage in meaningful learning at home and at school. Reading together or doing learning activities at home is crucial to a child’s learning and development.
Here’s how families can participate:
- CBE At-home activities and resources: Find ways to make learning fun and impactful.
- Calgary Public Library Family Reading Pick: A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle, featuring a family reading adventure with a live performance and themed activities.
- Family Literacy Day at-home activities and resources: Engage in other literacy-related activities as a family
Complementary Courses - Semester 2
We are pleased to share that students’ Semester 2 complimentary course schedules have now been finalized.
We have worked diligently to ensure that students receive as many of their selected options as possible while balancing class sizes and staffing availability. We appreciate everyone’s patience throughout this process.
We kindly ask that you take a few moments over the weekend to review your child’s updated schedule so that they are prepared for this change, which will begin on Wednesday, January 28.
Thank you for your continued support as we move into the second semester. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the school.
Raptor Athletics and PE
Athletics
The first volleyball games of the season concluded this week and West Ridge is off to a blazing start! The Jr. Girls, Jr. Boys, and Sr. Boys all won both of their games, while the Sr. Girls split both of their games. All teams are back in action next week. Please visit the Raptor Athletics page for game times and locations.
From The PE Team
Students are entering the final week of Module 2, which means we’ll be starting Module 3 the week of February 2. The units in Module 3 include Badminton, Dodgeball/Speedball, Fitness/Health, and Winter Activities/Health. One of those Health units will be on Human Sexuality. If you have not already done so, please ensure that you have returned the opt-in/opt-out form for your child. Students will also need to be prepared to go outside during the Winter Games and Activities unit. The CBE allows us to be outside in weather as cold as -20 degrees Celsius, but students need to be prepared with proper clothing and footwear.
Field Trips
Earlier this week we had a group of Grade 8 students from our Outdoor Education program complete their final field trip of the semester. The weather was perfect, the snow was firm, and Peter Lougheed Provincial Park was filled with laughter and smiles as the students, many of whom were new to these activities, navigated the Pocaterra trails on cross-country skis and snowshoes. We are looking forward to a similar experience for our Grade 7s and 9s next week.
Our first downhill ski and snowboard trip of the year is now in the books. We had 65 Grade 7 students at Nakiska for ski and snowboard lessons on Thursday. The chilly weather didn’t seem to bother anyone and we could still see the huge smiles beneath all the warm layers! Our Grade 6s will be headed to Nakiska next week for their own ski/snowboard lessons.
Sr. Girl’s Split the Night
The Senior Girls volleyball team had a good start to their season Wednesday evening, splitting sets with both Griffith Woods and William D. Pratt. The Raptors started out strong with a 25-13 win over Griffith Woods, in the first set, followed by a hard fought battle ending up in a 21-25 loss. In the game against William D. Pratt, the Raptors fought hard in the first set losing 19-25, but came back strong to take the second set 25-19. When asked what she felton were the team’s strengths, team co-captain Savannah said “We communicated well and we had some impressive hitting and serving”. As for goals for upcoming games, co-captain Leire points out “we need to work on serve receive and covering tips over the net”. Next games are Wednesday, January 28th at Vincent Massey.
