Honouring the Summer Solstice
June is a time of growth, celebration, and change both at school and in nature. As the days grow longer and warmer, we see signs of the season all around us: fresh green grass, blossoming flowers, baby animals being cared for, and sparkling sunlight dancing on water. These are reminders that Na’a (Mother Earth) is fully awake, and Niipo (summer) is near.
On Sunday, June 21, we will mark the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, when Na’toosi (Grandfather Sun) reaches his highest point in the sky and shines the longest. This day has deep meaning in many Indigenous communities, where it is a time for renewal, connection, and ceremony. Blackfoot Elder Saa’kokoto shares that summer is a season of abundance, a time to gather not only food but also life’s experiences, which help shape who we are becoming.
As the school year comes to a close, the solstice invites us to reflect with gratitude for what we’ve learned, how we’ve grown, and all the possibilities ahead. We encourage families to take a moment together on this special day to look to the East, as the sun rises, and welcome the light, the warmth, and the opportunities of summer. I’ll keep my fingers crossed that it doesn’t rain.
Grade 9 Farewell
Rehearsal
This is a reminder that students are expected to remain at school on Monday, June 22 following the completion of their Social Studies PAT exam.
After the exam, we will be conducting an important walkthrough and rehearsal for the Grade 9 Farewell ceremony. Student attendance and participation are essential to help ensure the event runs smoothly and that everyone understands their role and responsibilities. Please avoid making arrangements for your child to leave school early on Monday unless absolutely necessary.
Farewell
As a reminder, the Grade 9 Farewell Ceremony will begin at 4:30 p.m. sharp on Tuesday, June 32. Doors to the gym will open at 4:00 p.m. for family and guests. Students are asked to report to the front foyer area with their homerooms no later than 4:15 p.m. so we can organize the procession and begin the ceremony on time.
After the ceremony students will head over to the evening venue for 6:00 p.m. as dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. We ask that students are picked up at or before 9:00 pm from the venue.
Thank you for your support as we prepare for this special event and celebrate our Grade 9 students
Pascal Mathematics Contest
We are proud to celebrate the achievements of West Ridge students in this year’s Pascal Mathematics Contest. They demonstrated strong problem solving skills, perseverance, and a commitment to excellence.
We are especially pleased to recognize Ruxing Pei, who earned a medal of Outstanding Achievement, an exceptional accomplishment with a score of 138 out of 150 which placed them in the top 1% of over 25,000 participants.
Zichong Fan, Chloe Wong, Jaemin Kim, and Mandy Ao all received a certificate of distinction for their impressive achievements.
