Focusing on What is Important

At West Ridge School, we continue to return to what is most important: nurturing confidence, curiosity, and connection in our students. In his presentation to families on Wednesday night, Michael Chiasson reminded us that young people thrive when the adults around them help them focus on what truly matters: believing in themselves, being open to wonder, and building trusting relationships. His message aligns closely with the reflections we shared in this February’s report card notice, where we highlight the role of trust in supporting students as they navigate the growing independence of middle school. The journey of learning is never just about grades; it is about helping each student discover who they are becoming and encouraging them to approach their world with curiosity, courage, and a sense of possibility.

In the event you missed the notice  at the end of the report card we have posted it below:

“Once we believe in ourselves, we can risk curiosity, wonder, spontaneous delight or any experience that reveals the human spirit.” — E.E. Cummings

“The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing.” — Albert Einstein

Dear West Ridge School Families,

As we share the February report card, we want to highlight the meaningful growth our students have shown, both in their learning and in their development as adolescents. Middle school is a time when students begin to lean into greater independence, try new things, and gain confidence in their abilities and relationships. The successes and the challenges they face along the way are all part of how they grow as learners.

Trust is an important part of this process. Students are learning to trust themselves as they take risks, to trust their classmates as they work together, and to trust the adults around them to support, guide, and encourage them. This sense of shared trust helps strengthen our school community and encourages students to approach new learning with confidence and curiosity. We are grateful for the trust you place in us as educators, and we take that responsibility seriously as we work alongside your children each day.

Over the coming weeks, we encourage you to review the report card with your child, celebrate what they’ve accomplished, and talk about what they hope to focus on in the months ahead. The conversations you have at home and the support you provide truly make a difference in their learning and well‑being.

If you have any questions or would like to talk more about your child’s progress, please reach out to their teacher.

Sincerely,

Jeremy Lang

Principal

Raptors Athletics & PE

Athletics

Both of our senior volleyball teams made the finals of the Ernest Manning Feeder Tournament last week. Our girls lost a back-and-forth game in the 3rd set, while our boys pulled out a tight victory in straight sets. Congratulations to both of you for representing West Ridge so well at that tournament! League play resumed for all four teams this week where our Jr. Girls, Jr. Boys, and Sr. Girls all split both of their games. Our Sr. Boys won their first game and split their second. Our Jr. Boys are the only team with regular season games remaining (they play on March 5), while our senior teams are competing in the Rally on the Ridge Senior Volleyball Tournament here at West Ridge. The boys play on March 4, the girls on March 5, and playoffs will be held on March 6. Come out and support our teams as they gear up for playoffs! For a full list of games, locations, and times, please visit our Athletics website.

Field Trips

We are happy to report that the Grade 9 Outdoor Education cross-country skiing/snowshoeing field trip will be happening on March 3. The bus will be leaving at 9:00am and will return to the school by 4:00pm. If your child is on that trip, please ensure they are at school on time so they don’t miss the bus. Stay tuned for details about the upcoming Grade 7 and 8 Outdoor Ed field trips.
