Raptors PE & Athletics

Physical Education

Good afternoon Raptor Families! Our Physical Education program is currently looking to bolster our golf unit, and we are asking for your help.  Although we are happy to accept all donations; We are in search of any LEFT HANDED golf clubs (specifically 1-woods, 3 woods and drivers) that are still in good condition and are no longer being used. Donated clubs will be used by students during our golf activities to help them learn basic skills and enjoy the game. Having a variety of clubs available allows more students to participate and gain hands-on experience.

If you would like to donate, please ensure the clubs are in good shape and safe for student use. Donations can be dropped off at the Main Office at your convenience. Thank you for supporting our Physical Education program and helping provide meaningful learning opportunities for our students.

Athletics

Congratulations to both our Grade 6 and Grade 8 Badminton Teams who finished first overall in their divisional tournaments this week! Outstanding work by our student athletes and coaches who made it all possible. Our Grade 7s and 9s are competing in their divisional tournaments next week.

Track Day

We are excited to announce that our school-wide Track Day is happening on May 14! This is a fun opportunity for all students to take part in various track and field events of their choosing. We also use this event as a quasi-tryout for our Track & Field team. Results from the day’s events will be tabulated and then students will be invited to join the Track Team and compete at the inter-school Track Meet on June 8. Please note that due to the nature of our Track Day on May 14, students will not be able to leave campus for lunch. Instead students are encouraged to bring lunch or they have an opportunity to purchase items from the food trucks that will be on site that day. Parents are welcome to come watch their children compete, but we ask that they stay on the hillside on the east and south sides of our athletic fields so as to not disrupt the events that are happening closer to the school.

Night of the Raptors

Preliminary planning has begun for our annual Night of the Raptors event. This is an evening celebration of athletics and is open to any student who competed on an inter-school team this year. Details about date, time, and tickets will be forthcoming, however we would like to ask a couple of things from our incredible parent community. A big part of the celebration are the amazing door prizes we give out each year. This wouldn’t be possible without the generous support of local businesses, professional sports teams, and of course West Ridge families. We are looking for any donations that can be used as door prizes for this event. In the past we’ve had everything from gift cards, new sports equipment, tickets/passes, items from businesses/companies, water bottles, candy, jerseys, clothing, etc. Basically, anything that junior high student athletes would like would be greatly appreciated. Donations can be dropped off in the main office (attn: PE Team) or brought to school by your child directly to the PE office. Recognition of donors will happen during the event with names being displayed during the slideshow and announced during each prize giveaway.

Previously, we’ve had a dedicated parent volunteer help with the planning and coordination of Night of the Raptor. Their children have since moved into high school and so we are looking for a new person(s) to assist us. Duties would include the purchasing of decorations (table cloths, balloons etc.) and drinks, assisting with securing a caterer, potentially finding a guest speaker, and other odd jobs to help bring the entire event together. If this is something you’d like to help with, please contact Tyler (tcdixon@cbe.ab.ca) or Jeremy (jebraynen@cbe.ab.ca) in the PE office. Thank you!

Grade 9 Farewell - Save the Date - June 23

We are excited to celebrate our Grade 9 students on Tuesday, June 23, 2026.

There will be a ceremony at the school beginning at 4:30pm and we ask that students plan to arrive by approximately 4:00pm to allow time to get organized before the ceremony begins. Families attending the ceremony would then come to the gym after dropping their child(ren) off.

The Grade 9 Farewell dinner and dance will take place at Waterfront Park from 6:00 pm to 9:00pm with dinner being served at approximately 6:30 pm. The dinner and dance is for Grade 9 students only as students have very clearly stated that they do not wish for their families to be present.

There is no transportation being provided by the school so students and families should arrange their own transportation to and from the dinner.

At this time the Grade 9 Farewell Comittee is working on putting together a few fundraisers to help reduce the cost. However, even with the fundraisers the anticipated cost is expected to be between $80 and $100. As with all school events, if the price is a hinderance in any students participating we ask you to please reach out to the school. Once the cost is finalized we will communicate this with families before it is posted on your MyCBE PowerSchool Account.

Students will be given a field trip form at this time which will be their “ticket” for entry to the Grade 9 Farewell Dinner and Dance.

More information will be forthcoming in the next few weeks as everything is finalized.

YYC Food Bank - WRS Cereal Box Challenge

We have been challenged by Griffith Woods School  to raise funds and collect cereal boxes for the Calgary Food Bank. They claim that they have already raised over 1500 boxes of cereal but I know we can do better.

Each cereal box donation brought down to Room 1102 will give students a one entry ticket to the raffle for a gift card. The more boxes, the more chances to win! Make your donations throughout the week and listen to the Friday morning announcements to see if you won!

You can also make a donation to our fundraising page online too!

Returning to West Ridge?

As we ramp up the planning for the 2026-27 school year we would like to gather accurate data about the number of students who will be attending West Ridge School next year as this can have an impact on staffing, class configuration, and the complementary courses that we can offer.

If you have a child(ren) in Grade 5, 6, 7, or 8 that will not be returning to West Ridge School for the upcoming school year, please email Mr. Lang (jplang@cbe.ab.ca) or West Ridge School (westridge@cbe.ab.ca) so that we are aware. If your child is in Grade 9 there is no need to email us as we know that they will not be returning next year.

Also, if you know of someone who may be coming to West Ridge School next year, who is not currently attending West Springs School we would appreciate if you could let us know that too.

Thank you for your help!
