Remembrance Day
On Friday, November 7, West Ridge School came together virtually for a meaningful Remembrance Day ceremony. Even though we were not in the same physical space, the sense of connection and reflection was strong as we honoured the incredible sacrifices made by so many people who believed in a better future, even when it came at great personal cost. Those sacrifices have shaped the world we live in today: the freedom to learn, to dream, and to grow.
As I shared with our students, these acts of courage weren’t just for the past—they continue today. There are people who serve and protect so that we can walk into this school feeling safe and supported. In the future, the responsibility will be theirs to make choices that honour those sacrifices by building communities of kindness, respect, and peace.
This week, our Grade 8 and 9 Fashion students added a creative and thoughtful touch to our remembrance by embellishing poppies. As they worked, they reflected on the symbolism and meaning behind the poppy and its significance on this day. Their contributions reminded us that remembrance is not only about looking back but also about finding ways to express gratitude and respect in the present.
We encouraged our students to carry this reflection with them: How can I live in a way that honours, those who gave so much? Sometimes it’s as simple as showing gratitude, helping someone in need, or standing up for what’s right.
School Athletics Update
We received an update from the CMLSAA regarding athletics that were interrupted by the strike. Soccer and basketball seasons will not be continuing. Regular season and playoff games have all been cancelled, and divisional banners will not be awarded this year.
Wrestling season was scheduled to begin in mid-October. The league has proposed a significantly condensed schedule to replace the original one. After much consultation, it has been decided that a wrestling team will not be offered this season at West Ridge School. This is due to the length of the proposed schedule and the resulting limited practice time availability, which ultimately affects student safety and preparedness.
Grade 5 Developmental Basketball sessions will still be offered on November 7, 14, and 21 from 7:45-8:30am.
Free YMCA Membership – Grade 6 Students
The Calgary Flames Foundation for Life and Calgary YMCA have again teamed up to offer students in Grade 6 a no-fee General Youth Membership (valid from August 1, 2025, until August 31, 2026). Students whose parents sign them up for the membership will enjoy member benefits at all YMCA locations in Calgary, including advanced program registration and discounted rates for programs, plus special Grade 6 programs and activities.
Parents and guardians can fill out a YMCA Membership form at any YMCA Calgary location or online. Bring your form along with your child’s Grade 5 report card, school ID to any YMCA location, or log into PowerSchool and show them.
