National Indigenous History Month
June is National Indigenous History Month in Canada, an opportunity to honour the histories, cultures, and resilience of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples across Canada. We acknowledge the contributions of Indigenous peoples to our society, their enduring cultures, languages, and traditions, and their incredible resilience in the face of historical and ongoing challenges.
Throughout June, CBE schools and service units will host a variety of events and activities designed to engage students, staff, and the wider community in learning about Indigenous histories and cultures. Staff, students, and families can also spend time in the community celebrating as part of Aboriginal Awareness Week Calgary.
Pride Month in the CBE
June marks the beginning of Pride Month, a time to recognize the pursuit of equality and rights for 2SLGBTQ+ individuals. During Pride Month, we recognize the valuable contributions individuals of diverse sexual orientations and gender identities have made to history and society. We affirm the importance of ensuring 2SLGBTQ+ students and staff have learning and work environments that are welcoming, caring, respectful and safe.
PE Update
Our Track & Field Meet is happening on Monday, June 10 at Foothills Athletic Park. We have been busy finalizing the track roster and we want to congratulate all of those student athletes who have made the team. The final list is now posted outside the Aux. Gym so please encourage your student to double-check to see which events they are competing in. Additional information was sent home in the parent letter and yesterday’s email, but a few things to keep in mind include being prepared for the weather as there are no indoor facilities, bringing enough water to stay hydrated for the entire event, and bringing plenty of food and snacks. Transportation will not be provided to students so it is up to them to find their own way to and from the event. West Ridge track singlets will be provided to each athlete as they arrive and must be worn during their competition. Singlets can be returned prior to leaving for the day. Please ensure students have returned their Acknowledgement of Risk forms by Friday, June 7. Without them, students will not be allowed to participate.
The Night of the Raptors is fast approaching. This is our annual athletics celebration. Any student in Grade 6-9 who competed on an inter-school team (cross-country, soccer, basketball, wrestling, volleyball, badminton, and/or track & field) is invited to join us at this celebratory event. There will be a year-in-review slideshow, a guest speaker from the Calgary Surge, a catered meal from Big T’s BBQ, student athlete awards, and an opportunity to win some incredible door prizes. It’s an event we look forward to each spring and is a fantastic way to celebrate our athletic achievements from the past school year. Additional information will be sent in a separate school-wide email tomorrow but the basic information includes the following:
Where: West Ridge School’s Main Gym
When: June 20th from 5:30-8:00pm
