Board Game Donations
We are excited that the Board Game club is looking at getting up and running again as it provides students with a fun opportunity to connect with one another, build friendships, develop problem-solving skills, and enjoy some friendly competition during lunch hours.
To help support the club, as well as provide some indoor activities for our Grade 5 and 6 students on those especially cold winter days, we are looking for donations of new or gently used board games.
If you have any complete board games at home that are no longer being used and appropriate for WRS Grade 5 to 9 students, we would be grateful for your donation. Games can be dropped off at the school office at any time.
Thank you for helping us create opportunities for students to connect, play, and have fun together!
Raptor Athletics
A few updates regarding our athletics program as we head into November.
Basketball
It’s hard to believe that we only have one week left in the regular season before playoffs begin the week of November 16. All four of our teams have had solid performances this season. In league play our Jr. Girls are currently sitting at 2-2, our Jr. Boys are 4-2, our Sr. Girls are 5-1, and our Sr. Boys are 4-1. All of our teams have also been competing in tournaments. The Jr. Girls placed 3rd, while our Jr. Boys finished 5th in the North West Classic Junior Tournament. Our Sr. Girls captured gold in the Ernest Manning Feeder Tournament, while our Sr. Boys settled for silver after a hard-fought finals. Our Sr. Boys are playing in the championship game of the North West Classic Senior Tournament this evening at Simon Fraser School. Best of luck to you in that game!
This morning also marked the final Grade 5 Developmental Basketball session for this season. We would like to extend a huge thank you to Ms. Burns for coaching those sessions and for creating a space for our Grade 5s to learn and develop their skills. Stay tuned for additional developmental sessions coming up during volleyball season.
Wrestling
Our wrestling season is rolling right along. The team has just concluded their third week of practice as they prepare for their first competition; the Wolverine Classic Tournament at Mountain Park School on November 5 and 6. Best of luck to all of our wrestlers who are competing in their first tournament of the season.
For the most up-to-date information about practices, games, tournaments, etc. please refer to our athletics website. Thank you for your continued support of the Raptor Athletics program!
Raptor Jacket Racket & Food Bank Drive
As we head into the colder months and the holiday season, West Ridge School will be collecting donations to support families in our community.
Over the next few weeks, we will be gathering new or gently used winter clothing for Jacket Racket, including coats, snow pants, hats, and mitts/gloves. If donating used items, please ensure they are clean, free of holes, and that all zippers are in good working order. Jacket Racket has been helping Calgary students stay warm since the 1980s, providing winter clothing to children and youth from Kindergarten through Grade 12.
We will also be collecting donations for the Calgary Food Bank. Some of their most-needed items include canned vegetables and fruit, pasta sauce, soup, peanut butter, canned beans, rice, pasta, cereal, granola bars, diapers, and powdered baby formula.
We know that not every family is in a position to give, but if you are able to contribute, even a small donation can make a big difference. Whether it is a warm winter jacket, a pair of mitts, or a few food items, your generosity helps support Calgary families who may be facing challenges this season.
Thank you for helping us demonstrate what it means to be a caring community. Together, we can help ensure that more families have warm clothing, food on the table, and a little extra support during the holidays.
A special thank you goes to our Grade 8 Leadership students for organizing this year's campaign. Their commitment to helping others and finding ways to give back to the community is something we are proud of and is a great example of student leadership in action.
School Council & Society
Council & Society Meeting
Thank you to all those who joined us at our meeting on Thursday evening. It was great to hear about our athletic team’s achievements and current practices, updates on student leadership, musical and band performances and gaining a better understanding on complimentary courses and flex groups. We also saw what items are going to be purchased and supported by school society. The minutes of the meetings have been posted !
Growing Smiles Fundraiser
Beautiful winter arrangements and poinsettia’s are available to order here. Order deadline is Nov 10th and pick up will be at the school and at a parent’s house on Nov 25th. Don’t miss out on picking up a festive plant for you or for your friends and family!
We are in need of volunteers to help hand out the plants. Please email infowrss@gmail.com. We will need a couple of helping hands at the school and someone who is willing to open their home/garage for evening pick-ups.
