Administrative Regulations
As we begin a new school year, the Calgary Board of Education asks schools to share several important Administrative Regulations and reminders with families. These include expectations regarding technology devices, student conduct, and creating safe, welcoming, and respectful learning environments for everyone.
Please take a few moments to review the information below to ensure you are aware of these expectations across all CBE schools:

Forms
Schools have a variety of forms that parents / legal guardians are required to complete or review and update, some of which are paper and others online. In CBE, the forms in an online format (SchoolEngage) are:
- Demographic Verification - 2026-27 – This required form is an Alberta Education and Childcare requirement as proof of Registration for funding purposes and includes your child’s personal information as well as parent / legal guardian contact information.
- Citizenship Information Update - 2026-27 – This form becomes available and is required to complete if you change your child’s citizenship information on the Demographic Verification form.
- Annual Authorization - 2026-27 – Combines the following forms
- School District Use of Personal Information - explains how CBE uses personal information in providing education services.
- Consent for CBE Use of Student Information – provides an option to grant / not grant consent for additional use of student information by school/district and third parties.
- Consent for Use of Student Information by News Media and Outside Groups (Third Party) - provides an option to grant / not grant consent for additional use of student information by outside groups and third parties
- Consent for Student Participation in Annual CBE Surveys – these surveys support school and system planning and help improve programs and supports offered to students
- Parental Opt-In for Notifiable curriculum for students in grades 3 to 9 – written consent of parents prior to providing instructions or materials that deal primarily and explicitly with human sexuality, gender identity or sexual orientation. Students are unable to participate in this portion of the curriculum unless consent is granted.
- Annual Authorization for Tryout form and the Fairness and Safety in Sport Act form (for female student athletes only) for any athletes wanting to play school sports. Please visit WRS Athletics' page for a digital copy of those forms
SchoolEngage is one of the applications found in your MyCBE account. This is the same account you use to pay fees, view academic information, book school conferences, register for busing, etc.
If you do not have a MyCBE account, on the MyCBE page click on Create a MyCBE Account. For online help refer to MyCBE - Creating an Account (includes instructions and a video).
All paper forms that need to be filled out and returned are printed on coloured paper and those with only information are printed on white paper. These forms will be sent home next week.
Please fill out the forms completely and return all forms, even those that might not be applicable, by Monday, September 14. This allows us to ensure that you have read and filled out all of the documents provided.
We are also encouraging all families to register to receive commercial electronic messages so that you receive all messages from your child’s teacher, West Ridge School, and the Calgary Board of Education. To register, please visit this site: http://calgary.schoolmessenger.com/cbe_subscribe.
Pancake Breakfast & Assembly
The first week of school wrapped up in the best possible way: a whole school assembly followed by our annual pancake breakfast. It was great to see students and staff enjoying breakfast together, connecting with one another, and having some fun along the way. A sincere thank you to the West Ridge School Council, Mr. Fong, and all of the parent volunteers whose hard work made the event such a success. Despite the less-than-ideal weather, the grills kept cooking and the pancakes kept coming. Thank you to everyone who helped create such a positive start to the school year.

Raptors Athletics & Physical Education and Wellness
School athletics are up and running! This email is intended to provide important information about our fall athletics, as well as opportunities for our Grade 5s. Inter-school athletics are available to any students in Grades 6-9, as outlined by the Calgary Middle Level School Athletic Association (CMLSAA). Here are the details for the coming weeks…
Cross-Country:
There was a cross-country info meeting earlier this week and students attended their first practice yesterday after school. Practices will continue to be offered Monday through Thursday from 3:30-4:00pm. Students are expected to attend a minimum of two practices per week. The first cross-country meet is happening on Thursday, September 10 at North Glenmore Park at 4:15pm. Students must have returned their signed Acknowledgement of Risk forms to one of their coaches (Ms. Ford, Ms. Gouthro, or Mr. Mansell) in order to compete in the meets. If you haven’t already done so, please get those returned as soon as possible.
Soccer:
Soccer tryouts happened all this week. The girls’ team has already been selected, while the boys final tryout occurred this morning. As a result, the boys’ team will be posted on Tuesday morning. We would like to congratulate all of the student athletes who will be representing West Ridge this season.
The coaches for soccer this season will be:
- Ms. Gallagher, Mr. Whelan, and Ms. Ostafichuk for the Girls’ Team
- Ms. Angel and Ms. Gosselin for the Boys’ Team.
We are looking for a parent or community member that would be willing to help us with supporting our soccer goalies with additional training. If you are interested or know someone, please contact us.
Basketball:
Basketball tryouts begin on Tuesday, September 8. The tryouts will happen according to the following schedule:
- September 8: Sr. Girls @ 7:30am and Sr. Boys @ 3:30pm
- September 9: Sr. Boys @ 7:30am and Sr. Girls @ 3:30pm
- September 10: Sr. Girls (invite only) @ 7:30am and Sr. Boys (invite only) @ 3:30pm
- September 14: Jr. Girls @ 7:30am and Jr. Boys @ 3:30pm
- September 15: Jr. Boys @ 7:30am and Jr. Girls @ 3:30pm
- September 16: Jr. Boys @ 7:30am (invite only) and Jr. Girls (invite only) @ 3:30pm
The coaches this year will be as follows:
- Jr. Girls: Ms. Frei and Ms. Armstrong
- Jr. Boys: Mr. Braynen
- Sr. Girls: Ms. Kaminski and Ms. Burns
- Sr. Boys: Mr. Dixon
Grade 5 Developmental:
We are pleased to announce that our Grade 5 Developmental Sports program will resume this year. These sessions are open to any Grade 5 student and are designed around skill-building and gameplay and provide an opportunity for our fifth graders to participate in school activities outside of Physical Education class. Our first sessions will be focused on basketball and will start on Friday, September 18 @ 7:45am. We would like to thank Ms. Burns for offering to coach these sessions.
Paperwork:

Please visit WRS Athletics' page for a digital copy of those forms. Forms can be returned to the PE office as soon as possible. Please note these forms are for any Grade 6-9 student who is intending to tryout for any of our inter-school sports teams this year.
Additional information will be forthcoming about wrestling, volleyball, badminton, and track & field as we get close to those seasons of play. As usual, all pertinent information will be posted on the West Ridge Athletics website in a timely manner. Please refer to the website for a list of tryouts, practice times, game schedules, tournaments, and more.

We are the volunteer groups responsible for communication between the parents and school. We also arrange lots of fundraising activities which support our students and staff. Davidson Apple & Pear Fundraiser
Happening Now! You can place your orders for delicious apples and pears at www.westspringwestridge.ca. The ordering deadline will be September 9 at midnight. Apples will be delivered to the school on September 23. We are looking for a volunteer to help with handing out the apples. Please email infowrss@gmail.com if you can help out!

Walking Field Trips
The CBE values the educational benefit of field trips. Field trips close to our school can complement classroom learning by giving students opportunities to explore the community around their school.
Please be advised that the process for trips within walking distance of the school has been simplified, excluding restricted activities, e.g. swimming. As parents/guardians, you will no longer need to fill out a consent form for your child to go on a class trip that is walking distance from the school, e.g. to a local park. Appropriate walking distance is determined by the Principal and may vary, depending on the age/ability of the students.
Teachers will provide at least 24 hours’ notice when planning a trip to a local site. You will be notified about these trips by email.
As with any field trip, we want to inform you about some common hazards involved with walking trips. Please note that this list may not include all of the hazards for a given trip: Slips, trips and falls; Getting separated from the group; Street crossings; Pre-existing medical conditions and/or allergies; Exposure to infectious diseases (eg. COVID-19 virus, SARS, MERS, influenza).
If you have any questions regarding field trips within walking distance of the school, please contact Mr. Lang or your child’s teacher.

Literature in the Learning Commons
In the West Ridge School Learning Commons, some fiction books are marked with a blue dot to indicate they contain more mature themes or topics. These books, like all resources available to students, meet Alberta Education requirements and have been selected for their educational value and appropriateness for middle school learners.
At West Ridge, we believe students benefit from access to a wide variety of literature, as every child brings different experiences, interests, and levels of maturity to their reading. We also recognize that families may have different perspectives on what is appropriate for their own child. We encourage parents and guardians to have ongoing conversations with their children about their reading choices and to help guide them in selecting materials that align with their family's values and expectations. If families have questions about a specific title, we welcome the opportunity to discuss it with them.
School Supplies – Grade 7, 8, & 9
Students in Grades 5 and 6 will have their school supplies purchased for them by the school.
Students in Grades 7, 8, & 9 can use the following as a guide to what they will need for class. We are unable to provide supplies to students so they must come prepared to class. Some variations will occur depending on the teachers the student has assigned.

At West Ridge School, our goal is to ensure that all students feel welcomed, valued, safe, and that they have a strong sense of belonging within our school community.
