It has been great seeing our students walking through our doors again as the halls are too quiet during the summer. The energy and excitement for the 2024-25 school year is here!

We have several updates for you this week so please take a read through the information below.

PE Weekly Update

The start of the school year is always a busy time for athletics as we look to get three separate sports off the ground. Cross-country and soccer started this week, while basketball begins next week. Please note that tryouts for inter-school athletics are open to any student in Grades 6-9.

There was a mandatory information meeting for cross country yesterday at lunch. Any student who was absent needs to connect with Mr. Balogh as soon as possible because the first cross country meet takes place on September 11 at Stanley Park.

Boys’ and girls’ soccer tryouts started earlier this week. There will be a final tryout for the boys team today after school. This is for those players who have been invited back for the final tryout.

The girls team is in the process of being selected and the list will be posted Friday morning. The first practices for both teams commence next week with the girls starting up on Monday and the boys on Tuesday.

Basketball tryouts start the week of September 9. Grade 8-9 students are eligible to tryout for our senior teams while Grade 6-8 students can tryout for our junior teams. Any student who is hoping to make a basketball team this season needs to attend the first two tryouts. The third tryout is reserved for those students who make it past the first round of cuts. The tryout schedule is as follows:

Sept. 9 - Sr. Boys Tryout #1 at 7:15am and Sr. Girls Tryout #1 @ 3:15pm
Sept. 10 - Sr. Girls Tryout #2 at 7:15am and Sr. Boys Tryout #2 @ 3:15pm
Sept. 11 - Sr. Girls Tryout #3 at 7:15am and Jr. Boys Tryout #1 @ 3:15pm
Sept. 12 - Sr. Boys Tryout #3 at 7:15am and Jr. Girls Tryout #1 @ 3:15pm

The whiteboard calendar outside of the PE office will be kept up to date with all tryout and game dates and times. You can also visit the Athletics page on the West Ridge website for additional up-to-date information.

Our Phys. Ed. modules start on Monday morning. Please ensure your child has appropriate footwear to participate in PE class. Crocs, Birkenstocks, slides, and the like are not considered athletic footwear and become a safety issue worn for physical activities. Students without appropriate footwear will be asked to engage in an alternative activity. Phys. Ed. unit will take place both indoors and outdoors, so it is important students are dressed appropriately for the weather conditions.

Messages from School Council & Society

Welcome Back Raptor’s Pancake Breakfast

West Ridge School Council and the School Society are excited to be hosting the Welcome Back Raptors pancake breakfast on Friday morning at the beginning of the school day.

Thank you in advance to all the parents/volunteers that have signed up to make this event a success. The sign up genius was filled in record time.

Pancakes will be made with Krusteaz buttermilk pancake mix.

For students with dietary restrictions, there will be gluten free pancakes made with Flourish plant-based protein pancake mix. The packaging notes that the Flourish pancake mix is vegan, gluten free, dairy free, nut free and soy free but does contain oats. We hope this will accommodate as many students as possible to participate. Please note that we can not guarantee that there will not be any cross contamination and therefore, want parents to have the ability to discuss any specifics with their child(ren) prior to the breakfast.

Volunteers

Parent Volunteers are much needed and appreciated throughout the school year! A Volunteer Form is required each school year prior to volunteering. The forms can be found on the CBE website (see the link below), printed and handed into the office. Alternatively, a digital form is located on your MyCBE Account under the “Online Forms & School Registration” on the bottom left hand side of the page. Thanks in advance!!

Apple Fundraiser

Our first fundraiser is already underway! Order delicious apples from Davison Orchard before Wednesday, Sept 11. Pick up will be on Sept 25 at both the school and a parent’s house. You can order at this

Healthy Hunger

You can order lunch for your kid(s) at www.healthyhunger.ca Our first one is up and ready to order - Subway! Orders need to be by this Saturday and lunch will be delivered on Thursday Sept 12. We will have more lunches set up for the school year soon. Please note that you do need to register your child with Healthy Hunger each year (so we have the correct home room for them).
