Dear Parents/Guardians,
Here are some updates for the coming week:
2025-2026 Homeroom Placement
As we begin planning for the upcoming school year, we would like to share some important information about how class lists are created.
Class placement is a thoughtful and ongoing process that involves collaboration among our teaching staff and administration.
Our teachers use their in-depth knowledge of students’ academic, social, and emotional needs to build well-balanced classes that support the success of all learners. Many factors are considered, including:
- Learning styles
- Individual strengths
- Peer dynamics
- Overall class composition
Because of the complexity and care involved in this process, we are unable to accommodate specific requests for teachers, classmates, or classroom placements. We appreciate your understanding and trust in our professional judgment.
Class lists will be finalized over the summer, and you will find out your child’s placement when school begins in the fall.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership.
Complementary Course Selection
An email went home yesterday with step-by-step instructions on how to select next year’s optional courses. The period to submit this is from May 8 to May 15 (end of day). It is very important that you submit this by the deadline. After May 15, students who have not submitted their selections will be placed in classes that have space available.
Grade 5/6
Please note there is not complementary course selection for these grades, as they follow the mandatory Elementary course schedule from Alberta Education.
Athletics
Doug Brown, Director of Sport Performance and Co-Owner of Zeal Performance, will be giving a brief presentation and demonstration at lunch time (starting at 12:00pm) on May 12 in the Main Gym. This free presentation is aimed at any Grade 8 and 9 students who are interested in improving their athletic performance through dedicated strength and conditioning, speed camps, and cardio-based skills. This will be especially beneficial for those students hoping to try-out for athletic teams at the high school level. Bring your lunch and come listen to this engaging presentation.
Night of the Raptors
Night of the Raptors is our annual celebration of all things athletics. This event is open to any student, coach, or volunteer that was part of an inter-school team at some point throughout the school year. Attendees get to listen to a keynote speaker, enjoy a catered meal, receive awards, and have an opportunity to win some incredible door prizes. This year’s event will take place on June 5 from 5:30-8:00pm. Watch your inboxes as additional information about this event will be coming next week, including sign-up information and ticket cost.
Track Day
Our school-wide Track Day is happening on May 15. This is a full day event where all of our Grade 6-9 students compete in track and field events of their choosing. This is also how we select student athletes for our Track & Field Team that will represent West Ridge at the inter-school Track Meet on June 10. Our Grade 5s are also involved with Track Day and will be competing as a homeroom against the other Grade 5 classes. Students have already signed-up for the events they want to compete in and the PE team is busy building the schedule and creating heats. On the day of, students will proceed to their homerooms at 8:30am, where they will review the schedule and be reminded of expectations. Once the set-up is complete, students will be called outside and the competitions will commence. Students are encouraged to dress appropriately for the weather, bring proper athletic footwear, and drink plenty of water. Due to a very busy schedule, all students need to remain on campus even over lunch hour. Students will either need to bring a bagged lunch that day or they can purchase items from the Food Trucks that will be located in the staff parking lot. All events should be finished by 3:10pm, at which point students will be dismissed for the day.
Badminton
Our Grade 7 and 8 Badminton Teams wrapped up their seasons with the divisional tournaments this week. The final results will be announced once all teams have finished their seasons. Badminton divisional tournaments are continuing next week with our Grade 6 and 9 teams competing on the following dates at the specified locations. Best of luck to our final two teams as they close-out their seasons.
- May 13 - Grade 9: Singles & Mixed Doubles at Twelve Mile Coulee
- May 14 - Grade 6: Singles & Mixed Doubles at West Ridge
- May 15 - Grade 6: Doubles at West Ridge
- Grade 9: Doubles at Twelve Mile Coulee
Our Grade 5 Developmental Badminton sessions concluded this morning. Thank you to all the students who participated in these practice sessions and to Ms. Gordon and Ms. Cote for making it possible. We all really appreciate your time and dedication to developing the next wave of student athletes at West Ridge School.
