Dear Parents/Guardians
Here are some updates for the coming week:
Please note there will be no classes on Monday, May 19 due to the Victoria Day holiday.
Spring Band Concert
Grade 7, 8 and 9 Band students will be hosting our Spring Band Concert on Thursday, May 22 at 7 p.m. in the main gym.
2025-26 Homeroom Placement
As we begin planning for the upcoming school year, we would like to share some important information about how class lists are created.
Class placement is a thoughtful and ongoing process that involves collaboration among our teaching staff and administration.
Our teachers use their in-depth knowledge of students’ academic, social, and emotional needs to build well-balanced classes that support the success of all learners. Many factors are considered, including:
- Learning styles
- Individual strengths
- Peer dynamics
- Overall class composition
Because of the complexity and care involved in this process, we are unable to accommodate specific requests for teachers, classmates, or classroom placements. We appreciate your understanding and trust in our professional judgment.
Class lists will be finalized over the summer, and you will find out your child’s placement when school begins in the fall.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership.
Complementary Course Selection
An email went home last with step-by-step instructions on how to select next year’s optional courses. The period to submit your selections has been extended until Monday, May 19 at 11:59 p.m.
After May 19, students who have not submitted their selections will be placed in any classes that have space available.
Next year Grade 5/6 – Please note there is not complementary course selection for these grades, as they follow the mandatory Elementary course schedule from Alberta Education. If your child is in grade 6 now, course selections are needed for grade 7.
Athletics
Track & Field
Our Track Day yesterday was a big success, despite the chilly weather. I would like to applaud all of the students who gritted it out, competed hard, and made the most of the uncooperative weather. I also want to extend a massive thank you to all of the teachers who ran events and supervised students. Without all of you, a day like that is not possible! The track results will be available next week as we begin piecing together our Track & Field Team!
Badminton
Badminton season wrapped-up last night and all of our teams had outstanding seasons. Our Grade 6s, 8s, and 9s finished in 1st, and our Grade 7s finished in 2nd. Congratulations to all of our student athletes who competed and represented West Ridge School throughout the season. I would also like to thank our coaches, Ms. Gosselin, Mr. Stratton, Mr. Brophy, Ms. Angel, Ms. Lonsdale, and Mr. Braynen for all of your hard work, time, and dedication this season.
Night of the Raptors
An informational email was sent home to all Grade 6-9 families earlier this week with details about our upcoming Night of the Raptors celebration. If your child was part of an inter-school team this year and is interested in attending Night of the Raptors, please ensure the Google Form (linked in that email) is completed prior to May 22, 2025 at 11:59pm. The Google Form is your ticket/commitment to attend. Late additions will not be allowed as we need to confirm numbers with the caterer.
High School Fall Sports
A representative from Ernest Manning High School will be at West Ridge School for a presentation about high school sports. This presentation will be happening on June 5 in the Main Gym from 12:00-12:30pm. If you are interested in trying out for an athletic team at EMHS this fall, you will want to be in attendance for this brief presentation. Bring your lunch!
Environmental and Outdoor Education
The Grade 9 Outdoor Education camping trip is happening next week (May 22-23). If your child is on that trip and you haven’t already confirmed their dietary requirements, please email Mr. Dixon (tcdixon@cbe.ab.ca) by Monday, May 19 as they will be purchasing food for that trip early next week. Also, the fees have been posted into your MyCBE accounts and need to be paid prior to our departure.
