WRS The Week Ahead: November 6th-9th
Dear Families,
This week we have continued to see many great things happening in this building. Halloween costumes were in full force this past week and the Haunted House was ‘spooktacular’! Thank you to all of those who helped out for this event, teachers and students really enjoyed their visits.
Just a reminder that our Fall Break is fast approaching! Schools are closed for students from Nov 9th-14th and will reopen on November 15th. We will be looking forward to hearing about your adventures on the Wednesday.
Don’t forget to mark your calendars for our Parent-Teacher Conferences coming up on November 23rd & 24th. More details will be shared as we get closer to this date.
Have a fantastic weekend,
Mr. Connelly & Ms. Paxton
Updates this coming week for families are:
PE Weekly Update
Our senior teams competed in the North West Classic Basketball Tournament last week. Our boys finished first with a solid win over Senator Patrick Burns, while our girls finished second with a tight loss to Arbour Lake. Congratulations to both teams on representing West Ridge so well at this tournament. Our junior teams are competing in the Maverick Madness Tournament at William D. Pratt from Nov. 2-4. Best of luck to both of our junior teams!
Our boys basketball teams wrapped up the regular season last night with two wins a piece. Both teams will be competing in playoffs, which start on November 16. More details to follow.
Our girls teams are finishing their regular season tonight. Our juniors are playing twice at Griffith Woods, while our seniors are closing out their season in the Raptor Den. Let’s pack the gym and support our girls! Playoffs for our girls teams also start on November 16 with additional information coming soon.
Grade 5 Developmental Basketball continues again tomorrow morning from 7:30-8:15am. This is the second-to-last session with the final one happening on November 17.
Wrestling season starts next week. We have found a coach from the community (Mark Dewit), but are still waiting on his CBE clearances to be completed. In the interim, Mr. Thompson has agreed to start the wrestling season while we wait for that process to be completed. Mr. Thompson will be running practices on the following dates; Nov. 7, 8, 15, and 16 after school in the Aux. Gym. Any Grade 6-9 students who want to be on the Wrestling Team this year, need to attend these practices. Further information and updates will be provided in the near future.
Child and Youth Well-Being: A Webinar Series for Parents and Guardians
Well-being is a precondition for learning. As our understanding of student well-being continues to evolve, it is important for those that support children and youth to stay up to date on the same information so everyone can support student success.
The Calgary Board of Education invites all parents and guardians to join us in an online series focusing on child and youth well-being. These sessions will be hosted in partnership with experts from Alberta Health Services and will explore topics such as vaping, brain development, mental health, and sexual health.
This next session is November 16th 6:30-8:00pm, and focuses on Understanding Vaping: Across Canada, e-cigarette use, also known as vaping, is reaching new heights amongst teenagers. This presentation will focus on common devices used for vaping, substances vaped such as nicotine and cannabis, and the health risks associated with vaping. We will present on how to engage in challenging conversations with your young person regarding vaping.
