WRS - The Week Ahead October 10-13th

Dear Families,

Terry Fox activities are in full swing this week and our Terry Fox Run is this Friday!  We would like to extend an invitation to families to join us for our run.  We will be starting our run on the compound area so if you would like to join us please meet us outside at that time. Our Dunk Tank will be selling tickets as well during that time so feel free to participate and take your best shot!

A quick reminder that there is no school on Monday October 9th so next week will begin on Tuesday.

Happy Thanksgiving,

Mr. Connelly & Ms. Paxton

Updates this coming week for families are:

2023-24 Yearbooks

Our 2022-23 yearbooks are here! Current students in the building should have received their yearbooks by now and we are in the process of contacting families of former grade 9 students to advise them that the 2022-23 yearbook is now available for pick up.  Yearbooks will be available in the main office on school days from 9:30-2:30pm for pick up.  If you would like a yearbook to go home with a sibling, please confirm with the front office staff (403) 817-3552.  At this time, we do not know if we have extras available for sale.  We will send a message out to families if we find we has extras after everything is picked up!

Congratulations on a terrific season and a HUGE thank you to Mr. Balogh, Ms. Fournier, and Mr. Mansell for your time and dedication as coaches.

Our girls soccer team picked up their first win of the season, a massive 7-0 victory over A.E. Cross. Our boys soccer team finished the season with another strong win to remain undefeated and claim the 1st overall seed heading into playoffs. Both of our teams start playoffs next week with our boys playing at home against Griffith Woods on Oct. 10 and our girls playing at Bishop Pinkham on Oct. 11. Both games start at 4:30pm. Come on out and watch some fantastic playoff soccer!

Our basketball teams begin their seasons next week. Our boys teams start with away games on Oct. 11, while our girls teams play their first games on Oct. 12. Our Sr. Girls will be competing right here in the Raptor Den in the 4:30pm and 7:30pm time-slots. All of the other game times and locations can be found on the Athletics section of the school website.

West Ridge is a Downie Wenjack Legacy School. As such, each year students participate in a Walk For Wenjack to honour Chanie Wenjack and the thousands like him who never returned from residential schools. Last year the walk occurred during PE class and we are planning to do the same thing this year. We're hoping to complete these community walks on October 13 and 27.

The first Grade 5 developmental basketball session is happening tomorrow (October 6) from 7:30-8:15am. This session is open to any students in Grade 5 who are interested in learning more about the game of basketball. Hope we have a great turnout!

There’s a new volleyball camp opening in the Bearspaw area to help build confidence and skills for the upcoming school season. Please see the attached informative poster for all the details!

Basketball Games

We remind spectators that while at the school watching games, there are no in and out privileges and CBE code of conduct for students still applies. We all wish to enjoy watching our student athletes compete in a respectful and safe environment. We have also come to a decision as a basketball division (Bishop Pinkham, AE Cross, Griffith Woods, Mount Royal, Vincent Massey, and West Ridge Schools) that any student wishing to be a spectator at away games must be accompanied by a parent/guardian for the duration of the game.

Gift Card Fundraiser Committee

We are eager to do a gift card fundraiser again this year but we need some help on the back end.  A couple of the volunteers are moving on this year and we need new people to step in.  This commitment involves 2-3 hours of work per fundraiser (we plan to do one or two this year) and you can work from home.  Support will be available to show you how and answer questions along the way.  If you'd like to volunteer, please send an email to infowrss@gmail.com
