WRS The Week Ahead: October 16-19th

Dear Families,

We have a new addition in our office as of Monday this past week! Please welcome Diane Taylor to West Ridge as our new Admin E Secretary.  Ms. Ford’s last day is this Friday and we wish her well with her new ‘little’ addition and the adventures that brings!

A quick reminder that there is no school on Friday October 20th as it is a Professional Development day for staff.  So enjoy the long weekend!

Mr. Connelly & Ms. Paxton

Updates this coming week for families are:

2023-24 Yearbooks

Our 2022-23 yearbooks are here! Current students in the building should have received their yearbooks by now and we are in the process of contacting families of former grade 9 students to advise them that the 2022-23 yearbook is now available for pick up.  Yearbooks will be available in the main office on school days from 9:30-2:30pm for pick up.  If you would like a yearbook to go home with a sibling, please confirm with the front office staff (403) 817-3552.  At this time, we do not know if we have extras available for sale.  We will send a message out to families if we find we has extras after everything is picked up!

An Art Room Update…

Students have been busy creating so many amazing things in the art room.

Installation Art 7/8 have been building positive message tape sculptures that have been put up in various parts of the school.

Sculpture students have just had their clay sculptures bisque fired.  Their sculpting technique and attention to the details as certainly paid off.

Advanced painting students have completed fantastic monochromatic landscape paintings.

Art 9 has working so hard on creating their own bound sketchbooks with personalized covers.

Art 8 has completed a playing card project that focused on balance and unity using colour theory, symmetry and elements of good composition.  Many used watercolour pencil crayons for the first time in their work.

Art 7 are almost finished their Chris Uphues inspired characters working on colour theory with acrylic paints as well as practicing how to paint vibrant pieces focusing on tint, tones and shades.

Art 6 has had a unit using watercolour paints to explore textures and patterns in the creation of geodes and gemstones.

Students in Grade 7, 8 and 9 also attended the Masters Gallery field trip on Oct. 11th .  We would like to thank Ryan Green the owner of Masters Gallery for allowing us to explore the public gallery, learn about local artists and famous Canadian artists of the past, and get to spend time with his super cute dog.  Ms. Hassett would like to thank the parent volunteers for joining the students on this excursion.  It means so much.

PE Weekly Update

Our Girls Soccer Team’s season came to an end last night in the semi-finals. Congratulations on a solid season. Big thanks to Ms. Gallagher and Ms. Wolfson for your time and dedication to coaching the girls this season.

The Boys Soccer Team is competing in the finals this afternoon against Bishop Pinkham. The match starts at 4:30pm at the West Ridge field. Best of luck to the boys!

The Jr. and Sr. Boys Basketball Teams each picked up two wins to start their respective seasons. The Jr. Girls tipoff their season tonight at Vincent Massey while our Sr. Girls open their season in the Raptor Den. They play at 4:30pm and 7:30pm tonight. Good luck ladies!

Tomorrow morning is our second Grade 5 Developmental Basketball session. It runs from 7:30-8:15am in the main gym. Come on out and practice your skills.

Just a reminder that tomorrow during PE students will be completing the first Walk For Wenjack. West Ridge is a Downie Wenjack Legacy School. As such, each year students participate in a Walk For Wenjack to honour Chanie Wenjack and the thousands like him who never returned from residential schools. The second walk will happen on Friday, October 27.

Messages from School Council & Society

Gift Card Fundraiser Committee

We are eager to do a gift card fundraiser again this year but we need some help on the back end.  A couple of the volunteers are moving on this year and we need new people to step in.  This commitment involves 2-3 hours of work per fundraiser (we plan to do one or two this year) and you can work from home.  Support will be available to show you how and answer questions along the way.  If you'd like to volunteer, please send an email to infowrss@gmail.com

Speaker Ideas

Council is eager to bring in some speakers for parents and students this year. Is there a topic you’d love to learn more on?  Have a speaker in mind that you think would be a good fit for our community?  Send your suggestions to wrscouncil@gmail.com

Casino

We have many spots still available for the Sunday and Monday (Nov 5 & 6) shifts.  Find a friend and sign up together!!  It's a fun event to work and a worthy cause.
