WRS The Week Ahead: Sept 11th – 15th

Dear Families,

We had a great week this week!  We ended off our week with a Pancake Breakfast and Pep Rally where Riley the Raptor was meeting many students, staff participated in a tug-of-war, and both students and teachers participated in some relays.  Thank you to all of our parent volunteers today who made our pancake breakfast this morning go so smoothly!  We could not have events like this without your support.

As we head into our weekend please take a few minutes to review the messages below and take a peek at our school calendar, as we “hit the ground running” this coming week!

See you on Monday!

Mr. Connelly & Ms. Paxton

Updates this week for families are:

Bus Zones

Please be aware that we have two busses this year and we will need to ensure the front of the school (first 8m) is left open for one of those buses.  Please do not idle there for drops offs/pick ups and/or park.  We will be adjusting street signage to indicate the changes but it might be a couple of weeks before those are up.  Thank you for your flexibility.

West Ridge School Clothing

West Ridge is happy to be opening our School Clothing store again this year!  Order online to get your West Ridge gear!  Our store will open September 8th to September 24th, with delivery to students in their homeroom at the end of October.  See our link below for hoodies, t-shirts, jogging pants and more!

PE Weekly Update

Soccer tryouts are well underway after an initial setback due to poor air quality on Tuesday. The girls team has already been selected and the final roster has been posted outside of the PE office. Congratulations to all of the athletes who made the team this season! The final boys tryout will happen on Monday. The soccer game schedule has also been finalized and can be found on the whiteboard outside of the PE office and on the Athletics website.

The first cross-country meet is happening on September 13 at Stanley Park. Head Coach Mr. Balogh has provided all of his athletes with the important details for this race. Good luck to all student athletes who are competing!

Basketball tryouts begin on Monday and will follow the schedule below. Please note that students in Grades 8 and 9 can tryout for the senior teams, while Grades 6-8 students can tryout for our junior teams.

We have confirmed with the Grade 5 teaching team that our Developmental Basketball program will happen again this year. Developmental sessions will occur on Friday mornings from 7:30-8:15am on the following dates:

  • Oct. 6, 13, 27 and Nov. 3, 17

This past week PE locks were distributed to any Grade 7-9 students who wanted a locker in the changerooms. If your child was away during this process, please have them stop by the PE office and we’ll assign a locker to them. There are also a few extra lockers, so any Grade 5-6 students who would like one can also stop by the PE office and we’ll help them out.

Changing for PE class is not a requirement, but it is highly encouraged. The PE gym strip will be available for purchase once school fees have been posted in your MyCBE account. If your child would like a gym strip (t-shirt and/or shorts), please pay for them online and then send the receipt to school with your child. They can bring the receipt to the PE office and we’ll get them the correct size of clothing that they ordered.

We also need volunteers to help organize and hand out lunches to students.   This is a fun and fast paced job, and it's great because you get to see your kiddo during the day.  Police clearance at CBE is required to sign up (don't have one yet - pop into the office and the admin team can help you).  Please sign up here https://www.signupgenius.com/go/409054FAFA62FA2FF2-healthy2

Welcome Back from School Council and School Society

The volunteers from both West Ridge Council and Society would like to say hello and welcome you to the 2023/2024 school year!  We are excited and looking forward to getting to know the West Ridge community and helping out the students, staff and families.  Our council shares the voice of the parents and school at monthly meetings (dates to come out soon), getting the community involved in fun events (pancake breakfast), hosting speaker nights, plus much more.  The society is responsible for fundraising throughout the year which directly supports our students and staff.
